Bryan Mbuemo has stepped up this season following the eight month ban of Ivan Toney, seeing him out of the side until January.

Three goals in two games has seen the Cameroon international assume top scorer status in the Premier League.

Four points from two games has seen the Bees make a great start to the season, even without their number nine.

So far this season Mbuemo and Yoane Wissa have scored all five goals for Thomas Frank’s side.

The two forwards are taking responsibility for goals and in an interview with Evening Standard, the Cameroonian has discussed his season so far.

What has Bryan Mbuemo said?

Talking about his banned teammate first, discussing the qualities he added to the side. With his ‘character, energy and leadership’ he is a big miss.

Despite this Mbuemo believes it is on everyone else to step up: “we have the players to replace Ivan. Everybody needs to take responsibility now.”

This has been the case with the forward as he has had his best start to a season in his career, filling the boots of the Englishman with ease.

With his form, he has realised that will change perceptions of his level: “To be one of the best you have to assume the pressure that comes onto you.

“If I have to take this position then I will take it.”

Despite being a winger by trade, Mbuemo has spent his time this season as a striker. Something he is relishing.

He has also taken the responsibility of taking penalties: “It’s important for a striker to score in the first few games. I’m the penalty taker now, so I have to train hard at this.”

The attitude of the Bee’s man is paramount to how he is playing this season and is great to see.

Strikers always have goals in their minds for their seasons tally, something which is also on the forward’s mind: “I always set targets for goal involvements. For a striker, this area is very important.

“To help the team by winning, scoring, making assists.”

The goals for the season, by comparison, aren’t set. The feeling is that last season is a benchmark: “We just said we had an amazing season last year and want to recreate it. All the staff have the same mentality as us. They push us in every aspect.”

A great start to the season for Mbuemo and Brentford, long may it continue. With the attitude at the club, shown through the winger, form can only get better.
