Brentford are set to receive a windfall following FIFA’s announcement of the Club Benefits Programme, which will reward 440 clubs across the globe as a result of their players’ participation in the 2022 World Cup.

The Bees had six players who competed in the tournament, and are set to receive over $1.4m (£1.07m) of the benefit fund.

FIFA’s announcement revealed that 46 clubs from the English FA received bonus money because of their players participating, and Brentford received the eleventh-highest payout, ahead of the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle but below the top six and Brighton, Leicester and Wolves.

Brentford’s participants were Saman Ghoddos, Christian Norgaard, Mathias Jensen, Mikkel Damsgaard, David Raya and Bryan Mbeumo, with varying levels of success.

How did Brentford players fare at the World Cup?

The Danish trio of Norgaard, Jensen and Damsgaard could not repeat their fantastic Euro 2020 run of the previous year, as Denmark crashed out in the group stages without a single victory against Australia, France and Tunisia.

All three featured at various points from the start and off the bench in the three matches, but none contributed to Brentford’s only goal of the campaign against France.

Ghoddos, who was released by Brentford at the end of last season, played just 45 minutes off the bench against USA as Iran fell just short in the group stage despite victory over Wales.

David Raya was one of Spain’s backup goalkeepers, and did not play a single minute as his side were knocked out by Morocco in the last-16.

Bryan Mbuemo was the most productive player at the tournament, starting in all three of Cameroon’s group games as they fell just short of the knockouts, and provided an assist in a dramatic 3-3 draw with Serbia in gameweek two.
