The Bees hope to secure first Premier League win over Newcastle

Since Brentford were promoted to the Premier League, they are yet to beat Newcastle United but will look to change that this weekend.

The Bees were promoted in 2021 and ever since, there has been a draw and three losses against the Toon.

The most recent game was a close fought, 2-1 defeat at the GTEC Community Stadium.

Brentford has 41% possession, despite that they managed to accrue 12 shots and two big chances.

This resulted in 2.57 xG, although 0.79 of that was an Ivan Toney penalty.

On the flip side, Eddie Howe’s side only managed to accumulate 1.31 xG.

That being said their goals came from a long shot and an own goal, two things which go against xG.

On the balance of the game it is easy to suggest that Brentford should have won the game but football can be cruel.

What has been said about Newcastle United?

Chris Waugh of The Athletic has suggested that Alexander Isak will be the biggest threat that Newcastle will offer.

Isak scored last season at the GTEC and will be hoping to do so again.

On the Swedish striker, he said: “Alexander Isak is the one they should be looking out for because he needs a performance for Newcastle.

“We saw towards the end of last season that Isak is a player who has magic in his boots, he will be determined to make a statement at the weekend.”

Newcastle have been lining up in a 4-3-3 under Eddie Howe.

Typically Anthony Gordon and Miguel Almiron flank Isak up top which can cause issues.

This formation matches up with the way that Frank’s Brentford have been lining up so far this season.

Waugh believes this week is huge for the Magpies: “Newcastle need a win and it is a huge week for them.

“They have got Brentford on Saturday, AC Milan away on Tuesday and the following weekend, they have got Sheffield United away.”

Brentford have to try and take advantage of their mindset being on the Champions League.

With Bryan Mbeumo in the form he is in, there are goals to be had against this Newcastle side.

A win is possible with Howe’s side potentially there for the taking.
