Frank’s £40m transfer stance could backfire

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has made his stance on David Raya clear.

The Athletic recently reported that Arsenal are interested in signing David Raya this summer. Thomas Frank has stated that Brentford are open to a sale, but will insist on their £40 million valuation of the player being met.

Raya is certainly worth such a sum. The Spaniard was one of the most impressive and consistent players in his position in the Premier League last season. However, the fact he only has one year left on his current contract at the Gtech Community Stadium complicates the situation.

Due to this, there is a very real chance that Raya could leave as a free agent next summer. It would be little short of a disaster for Brentford if they missed out on getting any kind of fee at all for the 27-year-old.

Frank is clearly planning for life without the Brentford No. 1. The recent acquisition of Mark Flekken, who was the established first choice shot-stopper for Freiburg in the Bundesliga, demonstrates this. The Bees shelled out £11 million for the Dutchman – he hasn’t come to warm the bench.

Brentford ploy could blow up in their face

As the summer drags on, Brentford may have to seriously reconsider their present position on the Raya situation. The price tag has already put off Tottenham this summer, who opted to go for the cheaper Vicario instead. Arsenal also have Robert Sanchez listed as an alternative.

If all the potential suitors take their business elsewhere, Brentford will be stuck with Raya for the final year of his contract. At that point they will likely regret having not lowered their demands earlier in the summer.

Brentford are correct to push for the best deal they can get, but there is a balance to be struck. Taking this hard line on Raya’s £40 million price could ultimately backfire and result in the club not getting a penny for the twice-capped Spain international.
