Thomas Frank drops hint over 27-year-old’s future amidst transfer speculation

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has spoken out about the future of David Raya, amidst speculation that he will depart the club this summer.

Raya is entering the final year of his contract, and has little intention to sign an extension, whilst a host of top clubs are eyeing up a move for the Spaniard.

Tottenham Hotspur even agreed personal terms with the goalkeeper earlier on in the window, but baulked at Brentford’s £40m asking price, and this may be putting other clubs off of a purchase.

Speaking on Sky Sports whilst in attendance at the Silverstone Grand Prix, Frank hinted that Brentford are still open to a sale, but if no move materialises, they would be happy to keep the Spain international.

“We are open for a sale there, if we are hitting the right price. If not, then we have another good goalkeeper,” he stated.

Could Brentford’s strategy pay off?

The Bees are well prepared for Raya’s departure, having already signed goalkeeper Mark Flekken, and have put themselves in a strong negotiating position over their number one.

Given that a number of top clubs are interested in the 27-year-old, Brentford can hold out for a high price, and later on in the window desperation may lead to someone paying close to the steep asking price.

If no move materialises, then Brentford can benefit from another year of Raya in goal, and could even attempt to extend his contract next season, but right now it seems unlikely that he will be interested in staying.

If he does leave on a free transfer next season, then Brentford will have lost out on a potentially large fee for just one more year with him in goal. Although this strategy may pay off with a high reward, it is not without risk, and Brentford may have to consider lowering their asking price if no suitable bids are received.
