Bees man may have lost his international place despite win

Mark Flekken made his fifth and sixth appearances for the Netherlands and despite a clean sheet, his performances have been talked down.

The Brentford goalkeeper has started in every game so far, keeping one clean sheet so far, following his move from Freiburg.

It appeared that Ronald Koeman had selected Flekken as his number one with the injury to Justin Bijlow.

Bart Verbruggen from Brighton and Hove Albion has been discussed as a potential replacement, but Flekken played both games.

The Bees’ keeper kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over Greece with a very positive performance being reported.

This was almost ruined by a ‘shaky performance’ against Ireland in a 2-1 win.

Dutch journalists have been discussing his chances of continuing as Koeman’s number one.

What has been said about Mark Flekken?

After the game against Ireland, the Dutch press were out for Flekken.

Pim Sedee of De Telegraaf said: “He has simply lost his starting place again.”

When discussing his reasons for thinking this, he added: “He was a source of unrest in the defence.

“You can make a mistake at some point, but after that you just have to be yourself and give your defence some rest, but he didn’t do that at all.”

It is clear that his performance wasn’t well rated by Oranje fans or journalists.

The Brentford goalkeeper failed to make a save during the game and conceded the only shot on target that he faced.

With that being said he did concede from a penalty so he can’t be necessarily expected to save it.

Hopefully Flekken can continue his great club form moving forward despite some negative press in his home land.
