Brentford defender Ben Mee has opened up about out-on-loan star David Raya following some criticism of his recent performance.

Raya left Brentford over the summer following plenty of rumours linking him away from the club.

The Spaniard signed a new deal with Thomas Frank’s side prior to leaving to join Arsenal on a season-long loan.

Mee had a superb debut season with the Bees last campaign but has missed all but two games this campaign through injury.

During his spell on the sidelines, the Englishman has featured as a pundit with various outlets.

The defender hasn’t featured for the Bees since September and made a return to the bench against Burnley.

In spite of not coming on, a return to the matchday squad is a massive step forward for the former Claret.

What has Ben Mee said about David Raya?

While speaking with the BBC on 5 Live, Mee was asked about his former teammate.

Raya came under scrutiny following his performance against Chelsea. Mykhailo Mudryk’s cross-come-shot looped over the Spaniard.

With that being said, the Bees defender stuck up for his former teammate: “I think he’s been moving the ball well. Obviously, there’s two good goalkeepers there fighting for a spot.

“David [Raya] is a top goalkeeper, makes great saves as well as you know he obviously got caught out for the cross-shot yesterday.”

Obviously, Mee backs his man and knows the quality that he possesses.

The thing that Mikel Arteta appears to prefer Raya for is for the ability he has passing out from the back.

On that point, Mee added: “He’s really good with his feet. Obviously the Spanish national side the way they play as well.

“So, no, he’s top-class, a top-quality goalkeeper.”

There is no doubting what the defender is saying. At Arsenal right now the scrutiny on the keeper position is huge, however.
