Brentford striker, Neal Maupay has opened up about his lack of goals in the past year and how he hopes to change.

Maupay resigned for Brentford on loan this summer and is still yet to score a goal following his return.

Despite only scoring two goals last year for Everton, Thomas Frank opted to bring the Frenchman back to West London.

He made his first start for the Bees against Burnley and made a good account of himself and arguably should have had a goal.

The striker provides a different option than anyone in the squad and will be useful across the course of the season.

What has Neal Maupay said?

Maupay has only scored two goals in the past year and prior to that his last Premier League goal for Brighton was in February 2022.

Three goals in 20 months is an undesirable record for a striker.

This comes as a surprise given how deadly the Frenchman was in his first spell with Brentford, at Griffin Park.

On his lack of goals, he said: “I haven’t scored in a while so confidence is low, but it’s coming. I need to keep playing well and hopefully, the goals will come.”

Sometimes, as a striker, a lack of goals can go from a small spell to a baron one and it can get away from you quickly.

Looking at the game up against Burnley, he was very unfortunate not to find himself on the scoresheet.

On his luck in recent months, he added: “As a striker, it’s very frustrating and it is hard. I’ve scored goals all my life, so I just need a little bit of luck.

“Once I put that first goal in the back of the net then everything will be back to normal.”

Luckily, Maupay’s mindset appears to be very positive that things will change and that will serve him well.

Maupay’s baron spell

Looking at his form, it sounds as poor as it is, but as a striker the change can be rapid.

Take former Bees man Ollie Watkins for example. For Aston Villa, he had failed to score a Premier League goal in 12 games to start the season.

Look at him now, he is one of the best strikers in the league right now and is on five goals in nine games.

Maupay in recent weeks has shown that he has the drive and determination to become a top striker once again.

All strikers can struggle and once he hits the net once and gets it out of his system, he will set fire.
