It has now been suggested by Alan Nixon that the Black Cats are looking to tie their star man down to a new deal.
The journalist has said that the Championship side is ‘struggling to sort out a new deal with Clarke’.
It is unclear as to when his current deal expires, but he did sign a ‘long term contract‘ in July 2022.
His contract situation may make it more difficult for the Bees to get a deal across the line, but Frank’s side aren’t deterred.
How much would he cost?
It must be said that the Black Cats rejected bids from Burnley over the summer transfer window. £15m wasn’t enough before the start of the season.
It is safe to say after nine goals and an assist in 15 matches, his price is going to be more than what was rejected before.
Nixon has reported that if a new contract can be agreed at the Stadium of Light, Clarke will have a release clause inserted.
At around £20m, Clarke could prove to be an excellent piece of business. Given the list of names to come out of the Championship in recent years, this one is a no-brainer.
Fans may have some reservations given the recent signing of Keane Lewis-Potter, but Clarke could be more of a guarantee.
